Axon Reborn GP – Niki Lauda’s 312T at Monza Time Attack Challenge

Niki Lauda is someone who does not need any introduction but for the uninitiated, Niki is a F1 legend that raced between the years of 1971 and 1985 with a brief 3 year break to run Lauda Air – yes he owned and operated a charter airline! This brief story is nowhere near enough to truly represent the kind of racer Lauda was. In 1976 when F1 still raced at the Nurburgring, Lauda suffered a horrific accident that would have been fatal 99 times out of 100. There are plenty of images available online however, we will refrain from posting what is effectively a burning tomb with him stuck in the middle. An interesting aside is that Lauda wanted to boycott the race before the weekend started because he felt that the track was too dangerous and that there were not enough safety personnel on hand. Lauda ended up with severe burns on his entire body losing his right ear, eyebrows, and eyelids. Even with arguably one of the worst crashes in all of F1, Lauda decided to come back racing…

IN 2 RACES TIME! Niki Lauda only missed the Austria and Dutch GP. Lauda returned to racing in a mere month’s time! And even with missing 2GPs, he only lost the WDC by 1 point. Lauda would eventually come back and win the WDC the next year in 1977 and win another in 1984 with McLaren.

We lost Niki in 2019 just before the Monaco GP weekend, and he will be forever missed.

As we start reopening, it is our form of a comeback. Nowhere near Niki Lauda’s comeback but this event is hosted in his honor – both so we can remember and inform more enthusiasts of Niki Lauda’s achievements.
